The government announces the appointment of a new Chief Justice for the Manipur High Court.

The Ministry of Law and Justice has confirmed the appointment of Justice D. Krishnakumar, a judge at the Madras High Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. Justice Siddharth Mridul, the current Chief Justice, will retire on November 21. After his retirement, Justice Krishnakumar will take over the position. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended this appointment in a resolution on November 18, stating that Justice Krishnakumar, who is currently a judge at the Madras High Court, will become the Chief Justice of Manipur once Justice Mridul steps down. Justice Krishnakumar has been serving on the Madras High Court since April 7, 2016, and is the most senior puisne judge there, with a retirement date set for May 21, 2025. He has a broad legal background, particularly in civil, constitutional, and service law, with a focus on constitutional issues. He also comes from a Backward Community, contributing to the diversity in India’s judicial leadership.
The notification dated November 20, 2024, stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice D. Krishnakumar, Judge, Madras High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office, consequent upon the superannuation of Shri Justice Siddharth Mridul, present Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court on 21.11.2024.”
