SCBA EC members have sent a letter to Kapil Sibal requesting a meeting within seven days, as no meeting has been held in the last five months.

Eleven members of the Executive Committee (EC) of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) have sent a letter to President Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, urging him to schedule a meeting of the Executive Committee within the next seven days. This letter was dated Tuesday, as no EC meeting has been held since September 10, 2024. The letter is signed by a majority, eleven out of the twenty-one EC members. It states that according to Rule 12 of the SCBA Rules, the Executive Committee should meet at least once every three months for business matters. The letter notes that five months have passed since the last meeting on September 10, 2024, without any new meetings being arranged. It warns that if Sibal does not call a meeting within seven days, the majority members will take action on important and ongoing issues of the Bar as per the Rules.
The letter reads, “We, the undersigned majority members of the Executive Committee, SCBA, therefore request you to call a Meeting of the Executive Committee, Supreme Court Bar Association as per SCBA Rules to discuss important and longstanding issues of the bar within the next 7 days. If this does not happen, we will address all important and longstanding issues of the bar as per Rules.” The signatories include Joint Secretary Sandeep Singh, Treasurer Sasmita Tripathy, Senior Executive Members and Advocates Shobha Gupta, Jayant Bhushan, and Sonia Mathur, along with Executive Members Ashish Kumar Sinha, Anil C. Nishani, Shashank Shekhar, Yogamaya M.G., Rachna Gandhi, and Vikas Bansal. Last November, a member of the SCBA had also written to Kapil Sibal, reminding him of his election promise regarding a group insurance policy for SCBA members and their families.
A letter was sent to Kapil Sibal by Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, the former President of SCBA, expressing concerns about Sibal’s supposed lack of support for SCBA members. Aggarwala criticized Sibal for not backing a resolution to boycott the inauguration of the Supreme Court Museum on November 7, 2024. Last August, members of the Executive Committee (EC) had reached out to Sibal after a resolution, signed by him, was issued on the SCBA letterhead regarding an incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The EC members claimed that this resolution was never presented to them. At that time, Sibal was representing the State of West Bengal in a case related to the same incident. Aggarwala later warned Sibal about a potential no-confidence motion if he did not retract the controversial SCBA resolution.
In May 2024, Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai called for action against Sibal for participating in an election campaign meeting in the Main Bar Room of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh as SCBA President. During the peak of the SCBA election campaign, Advocate Kumud Lata Das filed a plea in the Supreme Court to disqualify Rai from running for President. Rai argued in court that the plea was instigated by Kapil Sibal, but the Court chose not to consider it.
